Hall Co. StormReady status renewed

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - In 2002 Hall County was the 18th county in the state to become certified by the National Weather Service [NWS] as being a StormReady Community. After a recent inspection from the NWS, it has once again earned that distinction.

To qualify, counties must meet a number of requirements, including the ability to monitor weather alerts 24 hours a day, be able to warn the public regardless of the time of day, have backup communication plans, and a network of trained weather spotters, usually amateur radio operators, to help pinpoint danger. Kent Frantz, Senior Service Hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, said Hall County has worked hard to reach this designation.

To be recognized as StormReady a county must meet criteria established jointly between the National Weather Service along with state and local emergency management officials.

Frantz said not every county in Georgia has made the grade to StormReady. Hall County is now one of 80 Counties in the state with the distinction. The certification is an attempt by the National Weather Service to raise the standard of severe weather warnings.
