Officials: 1 in custody after Ga. college shooting

By The Associated Press
AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) A suspect has been taken into custody after a shooting at a Georgia college left one person wounded, officials said Monday.

One person was shot at Paine College in Augusta and was alert and conscious when taken to a hospital for treatment, Richmond County sheriff's officials said in a news release. The school's sprawling 57-acre campus is just a few miles from the city's downtown area, as well as the Augusta National Golf Club where the annual Masters tournament is played.

Nearby Georgia Regents University was also on lockdown for a time Monday, though operations returned to normal after a suspect was taken into custody, the school said on its Facebook page. Georgia Regents University is home to a medical school and hospital, which is where the shooting victim was taken for treatment.

Paine Spokeswoman Tonya Williams said the lockdown was still in place at that school. Paine is a private school with just more than 800 students about 140 miles east of Atlanta.

The shooting came a day after another on Paine's campus, though it was not known if the two incidents were related.
