ATLANTA - Georgia would spend $42 billion on state government under a spending plan approved by the state Senate that includes raises for teachers and other employees.
The Senate voted 51-4 on Thursday to adopt a spending plan that differs slightly from a version supported by House lawmakers. Those differences will likely be worked out by a conference committee. Once there is a legislative agreement, the budget plan will head to Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.
State officials have the most control over the $20.8 billion primarily raised from state tax collections.
Republican Sen. Jack Hill, who heads the Senate budget committee, says the budget plan will allow some modest growth after a deep recession.
Democrats say the budget doesn't restore deep cuts to education funding that were made during the Great Recession.
