Hall Co. investigators say victim found at park was murdered

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Hall County authorities said Saturday they now believe they have a homicide case on their hands following the discovery of human remains at a south Hall County park on Thursday.

Sheriff's Lt. Stephen Wilbanks said investigators aren't revealing full details about why they think the victim found at Chestnut Ridge Park was murdered.

"We can say that the evidence at the scene where the remains were found indicates to the likelihood that the victim was placed there after death occurred," said Wilbanks.

Wilbanks said the body, found wrapped in a blanket in a park bathroom, was badly decomposed.

While Chestnut Ridge Park had been closed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers several years ago, vandals have frequented the park, according to Wilbanks. He said people can easily walk around the gate, and the park is accessible by water, since it sits on the shores of Lake Lanier.

Wilbanks said he expects investigators will receive some preliminary results on the cause of death from the crime lab in about a week and more information can be released on the case at that time.
