Early morning fire destroys large vacant house

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Firefighters suited up early Saturday morning to battle a house fire on Grant Ford Road, according to Hall County Fire Marshall Scott Cagle.

Cagle said the 3:00 a.m. blaze sent firefighters to the 6200 block of the road, near Dove Court, where the vacant house was about 80 percent involved in flames.

"Before they ever got to the road, they called in and sited the fire, sited the glow in the sky. They knew they had a very large working fire," Cagle said.

First responders were delayed by a locked gate and then ran into another delay.

"Proceeding down the driveway, (they) saw several trees that had been laid over, apparently just because of time and the storms and the house being vacant, not freshly cut down," Cagle said.

He said crews were forced to use a shuttle operation to get water to the fire because of the length of the driveway.

Cagle said the 15,000 square foot bank-owned home had been vacant for several years, and there were signs of vandalism, like stripped wires.

Cagle called the fire suspicious, but said the cause is not yet known. An investigator was expected to return to the scene Saturday.

The house is a total loss.
