Furlough days end for Hall Co. workers

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Hall County workers have been told there will be no more furlough days for the rest of the fiscal year.

County commissioners decided at their last meeting to cancel unpaid furlough days which had been scheduled for April 15 and June 10.

"This is certainly the fruit of everyone's labor and scarifice," said Hall County Administrator Randy Knighton. "The employees have certainly sacrificed over the last few years."

Knighton pointed out that careful management of finances enabled the county to come in about three percent under budget for the year, allowing for the restoration of the work days.

"I would also add that certainly this is an enhancement to the service we can provide because on furlough days, of course, when we're not here we don't have the direct ability to serve the public."

Knighton added that there are no furlough days scheduled at all for the next year. Still, he said, county officials will be keeping a close watch on finances.

"We were very, very conservative in our approach [last year], we were very careful in how we monitored revenues and expenditures and we'll continue that approach," said Knighton.
