Channel markers to increase boating safety at Sunset Cove

BUFORD - On the heels of the deaths of three young boys on Lake Lanier earlier this year, new boating safety measures have been put in place at Sunset Cove.

An official with Lake Lanier Islands Resort said they've installed red and green channel markers off the shore of the cove, which are designed to aid in navigation through the busy harbor and allow better access to the cove for emergency responders.

According to authorities, the red channel markers should be kept to the right as boaters leave Sunset Cove to "return" to the main channel of the lake, and green channel markers should be kept to the right when entering the Cove.

Officials with the resort said the addition of the channel markers have been a part of their plan for Sunset Cove since its inception.

Two Buford brothers were killed in a boating accident in June, while another young boy died earlier this month after the inner tube he was riding on was struck by a personal watercraft.
