Benefit set for Banks Co. 5th grader battling ovarian cancer

LULA - A North Georgia community is rallying around a family dealing with a rare diagnosis.

Beth Blake said her daughter is a friend of Jessica Cameron, the 5th grade student at Banks County Elementary School who woke up with horrible pain one morning in May and was rushed to the emergency room.

"They did tests and then a CAT scan and then sent her straight to Scottish Rite because the tumor had already ruptured," Blake said. "She had a 12 centimeter mass on her ovary."

Blake said Jessica's family has been inundated with medical bills ever since the rare cancer diagnosis. She said they're holding a benefit for the family on Aug. 4 at the Lula Depot.

"We're trying to raise money to go toward her medical expenses," Blake said. "As you can imagine, driving down to Atlanta and staying there... she gets treatments every two weeks."

She said the event is open to the public and they're still looking for donations to help make the fundraiser a success.
