GAINESVILLE — The Flowery Branch girls won their first Region 7-4A championship Saturday with a 50-34 victory over Marist at the Chestatee gym.

The Lady Falcons (24-3) went a perfect 14-0 in region play, counting two games in the region tournament.

Flowery Branch led throughout for its 17th straight win but could not shake the Lady War Eagles (20-7) until the fourth quarter.

They led 10-6 after the first quarter and just 19-16 at halftime. Flowery Branch extended the lead to 34-28 heading into the fourth quarter and blew it open by holding Marist, the 2018 Region 7-4A champion, to just 5 points.

Caroline Wysocki led the way for Flowery Branch with 18 points. Ashley Scott added 10 points for the Lady Falcons.

Region 7-4A will play Region 6-4A in the first round of the playoffs, which begin next Friday at the home of the higher seeded team.

Sawyer Passmore had 17 points and Noah Edmondson 11 but it wasn't enough to help the Spartans overcome the Titans in the boys third-place game in the Region 7-4A tournament.

Blessed Trinity outscored West Hall in every quarter but the Spartans trailed just 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime. The Titans took a 48-36 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Quincy Holcomb had 9 points for West Hall.

The Spartans will take on Region 6-4A champion Southeast Whitfield in the first round of the Class 4A tournament next week.
