Hall Dems call for ratification of Equal Rights Amendment by state Legislature

By AccessWDUN Staff

Bipartisan efforts in the Georgia Senate calling for the state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment have drawn the support of the Hall County Democratic Party.

The ERA passed both the United States Senate and House of Representatives in 1972, and would become an amendment to the U.S. Constitution if 38 states ratify it. Now, 57 years later, 37 states have ratified the ERA, the last of which was Illinois, which just took action in 2018.

State Sens. Renee Unterman of Buford and Nan Orrock of Atlanta, a Republican and Democrat, respectively, have filed companion legislation in the Senate that would ratify the ERA.

“Women come as members of all parties, of all political stripes and all professions,” Orrock said. “There’s a broad consensus across this country that women’s rights should be enshrined in the highest laws and the (commanding) documents of our democracy.”
