Tuesday car chase results in arrest of Mt. Airy man

CLARKESVILLE – A Mt. Airy man whose vehicle was being stopped for a minor traffic violation Tuesday afternoon now faces a number of charges after a chase in the Cornelia area.

Habersham County deputies stopped a black Ford Focus driven by Jonathan Pitts, 31, of Mt. Airy on Ga. 385 just before the traffic light at Camp Creek Road in Cornelia about 4:35 p.m.

As the deputy approached the car, the driver fled. The deputy pursued the vehicle on Ga. 385 (Veterans Memorial Drive), then left onto Clarkesville Street, then left again onto Elrod Street, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz of the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office.

“The vehicle crashed on Elrod Street just before the intersection of Chase Road,” Wurtz said.

Pitts was arrested and is charged is trafficking methamphetamine, possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of heroin, possession of THC oil, fleeing and attempting to elude, obstruction of an officer, and several other traffic violations. He also was wanted for a probation violation in Hall County.

Pitts currently is housed in the Habersham County Detention Center awaiting a bond to be set on his charges.

There were no other vehicles involved in the chase and Pitts’ vehicle was the only vehicle damaged from the crash, according to Wurtz.
