Habersham County asks for third party verification of voter assignment

CLARKESVILLE — Results of a third-party voter assignment audit in Habersham County are expected prior to the distribution of absentee ballots for the General Election.

“The Habersham County Board of Commissioners has asked Habersham County Elections Supervisor Laurel Ellison to seek third party verification that the voters of Habersham County have been assigned to their proper legislative district prior to the upcoming Nov. 6, 2018 General Election,” Commission Chairman Victor Anderson wrote in a statement Friday night.

In late August, Habersham County officials conceded that errors were made that cast into doubt the results of the May 22 Georgia House District 28 Primary Election.

In that House District 28 Primary race, incumbent Rep. Dan Gasaway was defeated by challenger Chris Erwin.

At that time, Anderson acknowledged there were issues related to the ballots assigned to people living near the boundary of House District 28 and House District 10.

“After consultation with District 10 State Rep. Terry Rogers regarding the Board’s desire that there be additional verification, Habersham County decided to go to the source for verification of voter assignment,” Anderson’s statement reads. “The Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office of the Georgia General Assembly has agreed to assist in auditing the recent corrections.”

Voter assignment data from the Habersham County Elections Office and GIS Mapping System has been transmitted to the Reapportionment Office for verification, according to Anderson.

Anyone with questions may contact the Habersham County Commissioners Office at (706) 839-0200, or by emailing Anderson at [email protected].
