A man who drowned Monday night in Lake Lanier has been identified as Ali Ismaili, 23, of Buford.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office released the victim's identity Wednesday morning after contacting his family in Afghanistan.

The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and Forsyth County Fire Department, along with the Gwinnett County Fire Department, responded to West Bank Park in Cumming just before 7:30 p.m. Monday.

"A search was immediately activated at the location where two complainants said their friend was last seen swimming before the friend went under the water and did not come back up," said Forsyth County Sheriff's Cpl. Doug Rainwater in a press statement.

Rainwater said Ismaili was found in the water at 7:45 p.m. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Ismaili's death is the fifth confirmed drowning on Lake Lanier this year. A sixth person, an Atlanta woman who went missing on July 22, is presumed drowned in Lanier.
