Howard, Brown split Late Model features at Anderson

By Brandon Reed Reporter

Racers can be a superstitious bunch, so you could forgive them for not liking to race on Friday the 13th.

Don’t count Colby Howard and R.A. Brown among them, however, as both drivers scored NASCAR Whelen All American Series Late Model Stock Car victories at Anderson Motor Speedway in Williamston, South Carolina Friday night.

With a pair of LMSC features on the docket for the track’s “Lucky 13th” night, Howard, from Simpsonville, South Carolina, was quickest in qualifying, and would lead the field in the first 40-lap feature down to the green flag from the pole.

From there, Howard went on to hold off Trey Gibson to record his first feature win at the raceway in almost a year.

Luke Sorrow finished in third, with Ashton Higgins in fourth and Jeremy Burns in fifth.

In the second feature, it was R.A. Brown starting from the pole. The veteran pilot from Chapin, South Carolina held off Higgins to score his first win of the season.

Sorrow finished in third, followed by David Roberts in fourth and Gibson in fifth.

In other action, Steve Carver took home top honors in the Limited feature. Devin Kelley finished in second, with Michael Mote in third, Billy Brown in fourth and Michael Bruton in fifth.

Will Ragsdale started the night on the outside of the front row in the BM Modifieds feature, and went on to score the victory over Austin Northcutt in second, Trent Smith in third, Bryan Mitchell in fourth and Sam Brown in fifth.

Jeffrey Kummer charged from the third place starting spot in the Mini Stock feature, and went on to take the win. Ryan Howard, David Darnell, Chuck Mitchell and Ben Kay rounded out the top five.

In the US Legends feature, Connor Mosack edged out Mitchell Hedstrom for the win, with Karl Moberg third, Lee Jordan fourth and Austin MacDonald fifth.

Scott Parker was the winner in the Front Wheel Drive feature, with Manuel Molleda in second, Carey Smith in third, Shane Brown in fourth and Robert Hall in fifth.

Terry Shane took the victory in the Carolina Vintage Series feature. Danny Toney finished in second, followed by Hutch Holiday in third, Ed Ritchey in fourth and Howard Scruggs in fifth.

Anderson Motor Speedway returns to action on Friday, July 20, as the raceway family remembers one of their own.

BM Modified driver Richard Starkey, age 69 of Greenville, South Carolina passed away suddenly last Friday night after competing at AMS.

The speedway will be honoring Starkey during Friday night’s pre-race ceremonies.
