Boating incident numbers down again on Lake Lanier for July 4th

For the second consecutive year, the number of boating incidents on Lake Lanier dropped during the July 4 holiday, according to numbers released by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

In 2018, there were only two boating incidents, two boating under the influence citations and one injury over the July 4 holiday, which stretched from 12:01 a.m. July 3 through 11:59 p.m. July 5.

While there were no reported injuries in the same window of time in 2017, there were four total boating incidents reported and 10 BUI's, said Mark McKinnon with the DNR.

Elsewhere, Lake Hartwell also proved a relatively safe place to be in 2018, with only one person injured, one boating incident and one BUI, though those numbers are up slightly from 2017.

Last year, there was one incident, but no injuries or BUI's.

Statewide, there were eight total boating incidents, four injuries and 11 BUI's in 2018. There were no fatalities.
