Storms cause damage to homes in Gwinnett County, firefighter sustains ankle injury

For a second day this week, storms have pounded Gwinnett County, leaving behind significant damage in some areas.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County Fire Department said one of Wednesday's most severe incidents was a fire at a three-unit condominium in Lawrenceville. The building was hit by lightning around 6 p.m.

"The occupants reported hearing a loud boom and bright flash of lightning," Rutledge said. "They said the inside electrical outlets were blown. They traveled outside to find the side of the home on fire from the lightning strike."

Firefighters saved two dogs that were inside the burning unit. One of the firefighters sustained an injury to his ankle while fighting the blaze.

"He is doing ok and was transported to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment," Rutledge said

Rutledge said two families of the condominium, located on Mateo Walk,  were displaced and the American Red Cross has been called in to assist them.

Around the same time, fire crews responded to a lightning strike at a home on Calmwater Court in Suwanee. Another home on Arnold Mill Road in Lawrenceville was hit by lightning just before 6:30 p.m.; the occupants of that home have been displaced.

In addition, trees fell on several houses and crews responded to nearly a dozen reports of downed power lines across the county.
