Malfunctioning HVAC unit fills section of Banks County jail with smoke

HOMER — Firefighters responded to the Banks County Detention Center in Homer just before 3 p.m. Sunday after smoke entered a section of the facility.

“This afternoon just before 3 p.m., we requested assistance from Banks County Fire and EMS to respond to our detention center regarding smoke that was infiltrating a section of the building,” said Sheriff’s Capt. Carissa McFaddin.

“While the investigation is still active, it has been determined that the smoke was caused by the malfunction of an HVAC unit,” McFaddin said. “We have cut off the gas and power of this specific unit.”

McFaddin said no fire was detected and no injuries were reported.
