RABBITTOWN — Looking to maintain continuity, East Hall Principal Jeff Cooper turned to assistant Seth Thompson to take over the Vikings boys basketball program.
Thompson was approved at Monday's Hall County Board of Education meeting.
Thompson becomes just the third coach for the boys program in 36 years. He replaces Joe Dix, who stepped down last month after 14 seasons to take over at Collins Hill in Gwinnett County. Dix replaced long-time coach Seth Vining, who had led the program since the early 1980s, in 2005.
With the lateness of Dix's announcement, Cooper said continuity and familiarity were strong considerations. Thompson was an assistant under Dix the past two seasons after spending several years at Lambert as a boys assistant and as the girls head coach for the Lady Longhorns.
"We didn't have anyone in particular in mind (when we started the search) but with things happening so late we werent going to get the amount of inquiries the job probably deserves. We felt like maintaining that continuity we have in the program was important," Cooper said. "Coach Thompson was an outstanding assistant and knows the kids in the program and the style that people in the community are accustomed too. We have no doubt that he will do a great job."
The Vikings finished second in Region 7-3A during the the 2017-18 regular season but were upset in the region tournament by Dawson County to take a No. 3 seed into the state tournament. They were knocked out in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs by Hart County.
REMAINING OPENINGS: The Whte County boys head coaching job and cross country positions are still open following Sam Borg's recently taking over as an assistant athletic director at North Hall. White County officials could not be reached last week in an effort to inquire about the status of those searches.
