ATHENS — Due to another 1 hour, 37 minute lightning delay in Athens on Saturday, the Duke-Campbell loser's bracket game in the NCAA Athens Regional did not finish before the mandated 10 p.m. forcing Georgia's winner's bracket showdown with Troy, scheduled for 8 p.m., to be moved to Sunday at noon at Foley Field.
That also forced a change in the final two days of the regional as a whole.
Georgia will play Troy at noon on Sunday with the winner moving into Monday's finals. The loser of that contest will play Duke in a 6 p.m. elimination game.
The championship game has now been scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday with a second game, if necessary, set for 5 p.m. at Foley Field.
Georgia moved into the winner's bracket with a 13-5 win over Campbell on Saturday in the first game of the day. Troy advanced to the winner's bracket with a 6-0 win over Duke on Friday.
However, the Duke-Campbell elimination game on Sunday was halted in the seventh inning due to lightning in the area and did not resume until 8:15 p.m. When that game finally got back into action, the Blue Devils mounted a huge rally, including an 11-run ninth inning that pushed that game to a 10:20 p.m. finish. Duke beat the Camels 16-8 to stave off elimination.
The NCAA does not allow games to start after 11 p.m. and with a required 55-minute break between games during the tournament the Georgia-Troy game would not have been able to start until 11:15 p.m.
