Hall County Library System uses state funds to upgrade technology

The Hall County Library System has made some upgrades to the technology at all library branches, including adjustments to the Wi-Fi, new computers and tablets for children.

First, the Wi-Fi speed at all library branches has been increased, according to Executive Director Lisa MacKinney.

"We've also replaced about two-thirds of our computers for adults and children," said MacKinney.

And, she said the kids got a little extra treat as well.

"For children's protection and trying to respect parental rights, we do ask parents to give their child written permission before they're allowed to access internet computers... so for kids who want to come in and just play or do a game, we were able to do public iPads that don't have internet access. They're just loaded with educational games and apps."

These are available at every library location.

State funding allowed for the library system to make these upgrades. The Georgia Legislature has provided dedicated state funding to public libraries specifically for replacing and upgrading technology since 2017; these funds are committed to improve services and equipment for public use.

"Which means, not for my staff computers, not for anything behind the scenes, it's supposed to be for things that benefit the public," said MacKinney.

Some federal funds are available for similar projects, however matching funds are required. MacKinney said they were able to get the federal funds using the matching funds from the state.

In addition, MacKinney said they hoped to upgrade their microfilm machine at some point, as well as upgrade the rest of their computers with a continuation of the state funds in 2019.

The technology isn't the only thing getting an upgrade. The library system is currently in the re-design process for the main branch in Gainesville. MacKinney said the state gave them a $2 million grant to match local SPLOST and Impact fee money they already had to renovate the space.
