Memorial service set for man whose public safety career spanned 40 years

BALDWIN — A man who gave more than half his life to public safety in Jackson and Habersham counties and across Georgia will be remembered in a memorial service Thursday in Jefferson.

Jack F. Scott, 79, of Cornelia died Sunday, May 27.

A native of Jackson County, Scott was retired Area One field coordinator for the Office of the Governor, working in emergency management for 28 years.

Additionally, Scott formerly served as Jackson County Civil Defense director, was an emergency medical technician, a firefighter and a deputy sheriff, for a combined 40 years in public safety for the residents of Georgia.

The U.S. Army veteran served with the 2nd Armored Division, and had lived in Habersham County since 1995.

Scott was a Life Member of the Emergency Management Association, Life Member of 2nd Armored Division Association, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason, member of the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association, member of Georgia Carry Organization, and a member of 1954 Eagle Scout Troop 158 in Jefferson.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Woodbine Cemetery in Jefferson, with full military honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard, Habersham County American Legion Post 84, Grant Reeves VFW Post 7720, and Rabun County DAV Chapter 15.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today, May 30, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest.
