Hall County ready to commemorate Memorial Day, rain or shine

By AccessWDUN Staff

As forecasters continue to predict rain for Memorial Day, events planned to commemorate the armed service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice will go on no matter the weather.

The Rock Creek veterans will hold their annual Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 27 at Rock Creek Parkway just off the Gainesville Square. The recognition of the war dead from the Gainesville-Hall County area begins at 2 p.m.

Dave Dellinger, who is in charge of coordinating the Memorial Day Parade down Green Street in Gainesville said the event will happen rain or shine. The only way the parade would be canceled would be in the event of lightning, which could be a danger to parade-goers and participants. The annual parade is set to step off at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28.

At the same hour, the City of Lula has scheduled a Memorial Day program at Veterans Park on Main Street. Guest speaker for the event on Monday will be SFC Kenneth L. Thornton, retired. Thornton served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1986. He served in Vietnam in 1967 where he was wounded in action twice. Thornton is the recipient of two Purple Heart medals and one Medal for Meritorious Service with Valor in Action.
