MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — Prosecutors and defense lawyers are disagreeing about who is the victim in the case of an Alabama doctor accused of prescribing drugs that killed the former guitarist for rock band 3 Doors Down.
Prosecutors say the victim was 38-year-old Matthew Roberts, the guitarist found dead in a Wisconsin hotel room in 2016. Al.com reports they blame Dr. Richard Snellgrove, saying in opening arguments Friday in Mobile that his criminal behavior is why the Fairhope physician is on trial for illegally prescribing drugs and helping defraud insurance companies.
But Snellgrove's lawyer says he's the true victim. Dennis Knizely (NEYE'-zlee) says prosecutors have unfairly targeted Snellgrove because Roberts was famous. Knizely says Snellgrove's actions were reasonable and that it's not the physician's fault that Roberts was abusing drugs.
