UPDATE: Buford woman charged for hitting, killing inmate on Gwinnett work detail

A Buford woman was distracted behind the wheel, police said, when she fatally struck an inmate on a work detail Wednesday in Lawrenceville.

Jennifer Adkins, 44, was traveling along Lawrenceville Highway near Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road around 9:42 a.m. when she struck Hunter O'Conner, 22, of Mabelton with her Chevy car, according to Sgt. Jake Smith, Gwinnett Police spokesman.

O'Conner was working traffic control for the inmate work detail, and died at the scene.

Adkins, who stayed on scene, was charged with second-degree vehicular homicide, distracted driving and following too closely.

She was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Police do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were involved.

Smith did not immediately know what form of distraction led to Adkins' distracted driving charge, but reminded drivers to put down cellphones while behind the wheel.
