Golf: Gainesville girls and boys, North Hall boys each qualify for state

EVANS — The Gainesville girls golf team shot its way to the Area 2-6A crown on Monday at Bartram Trail Golf Course in Evans.

The Lady Red Elephants not only clinched a berth in the Class 6A state tournament via the win but will enter the penultimate match in style after firing a 271 in Evans to claim their first Area title since 2014.

Gaineville finished 19 strokes ahead of second place Lakeside, Evans (290), while Lanier shot a 302 and Grovetown a 312 as all four teams qualified for the state tournament, which will take place at Jekyll Island, May 21-22. 

After winning area in 2014, the Lady Red Elephants went on to finish as Class 6A runner-up.


NORTH HALL BOYS FINISH AREA RUNNERS-UP

The Trojans carded a team score of 317 to finish second in the Area 3-3A tournament on Monday at Chestatee Golf Club in Dawsonville.

Senior Bartley Forrester won the individual low medalist honors with a round of 68. Senior Michael Kallab also contributed a score of 78, along with an 84 by Jake Riley and an 87 by Chase Metcalf. Camden Gillespie and Ben Boyd both shot 94 for North Hall.

Hart County won the tournament with a 312, while Morgan County finished third and was the only other team to qualify for the state tournament with a score of 339.

The 3A state championship will take place May 21-22 at Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell.


RED ELEPHANTS SECOND IN AREA 2-6A

The Gainesville boys golf team overcame a sluggish start to finish second in the Area 2-6A tournament on Monday at Bartram Trail Golf Course in Evans.

The Red Elephants fired a team score of 300, finishing two shots behind Greenbrier.

Ryan Hogan paced Gainesville with an even-par 72, while Andrew Hughes carded a 73, Zayne Hilderbrand a 77, and Davis Weaver and AD Winston each turned in a 78. Brody Simmons also recorded a 79.

The boys Class 6A state tournament will take place on Jekyll Island, May 21-22.
