Annual burn ban goes into effect May 1

If you have minor outdoor burning that needs to be done, you need to call for a burn permit and take care of it before sundown Monday, April 30.

The 54-county metro burn ban goes into effect Tuesday, May 1.

According to Hall County Fire Services Captain Zachary Brackett, outdoor burning is prevented during warmer months to allow for healthier and more breathable air.

"The main thing is ground level ozone, most commonly produced in the summertime," Brackett said. "It can cause lung inflammation and other health problems. This helps control that with the heat of the summer."

The ban covers 54 counties - mostly in larger metro areas - and remains in effect until October 1.

Brackett noted that recreational fires, such as camp fires, are not part of the burn ban regulations.
