Gainesville Spring Chicken Festival proceeds to fund new scholarship program for ag, poultry science students

By B.J. Williams

Gainesville's Spring Chicken Festival is nothing new, but the 2018 festival will have a new twist, since proceeds will go to a new scholarship fund for students who plan to study agriculture science or poultry science.

"We think that since the poultry companies play such a huge part in making this festival possible every year by donating the chicken, we just wanted to pay forward what they're doing for us," said  Catiel Felts, Communications and Tourism Director for the City of Gainesville.

Scholarships will be open to students from Gainesville and Hall County.

The money for the scholarship program comes from a variety of activities featured at the April 28 festival, including the Professional and Backyard BBQ Cookoff Competitions. Visitors to the festival can purchase so-called Cluck Cards for $6, which is good for 10 samples from competitors.

Felts says there are 20 cook teams in the 2018 competition.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and activities are centered around the Downtown Gainesville Square.

Students who are interested in scholarship applications should contact the Gainesville Communications and Tourism Office at 770-531-6598. The scholarship funds will be administered through the North Georgia Community Foundation.
