Playoff tennis: Branch boys roll on, reach quarterfinals

ATLANTA — The Flowery Branch boys tennis team played its way into the Class 5A quarterfinals on Tuesday, knocking off Grady 3-0 in Atlanta.

The Falcons swept the doubles points and then stormed to a victory at No. 2 singles to clinch a third round postseason berth.

Nathan Holley won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of John Hollis/Brody Millwood also prevailed 7-5, 6-3, setting the stage for the No. 2 doubles team of Caden Caldwell/Gunnar Hetzel.

Caldwell and Hetzel dropped the first set 7-5 but fought back to take the second and third sets 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the victory.

Branch's No. 1 singles player Drayton Matus split his first two sets and was at 1-1 in the third set when the match was clinched, while No. 3 singles player Jack Thomas dropped the opening set and was yet to play the second set.

Flowery Branch will take on the winner of the Statesboro/Morrow match by May 2.
