Lakeview Academy alum wins Jeopardy! college tournament

Lakeview Academy can add a new name to its list of notable alumni — Jeopardy! champion Dhruv Gaur.

Gaur, a 2017 Lakeview alumnus and current freshman at Brown University, took home the $100,000 grand prize by winning the TV game show's college tournament.

The final aired Friday night, though it was taped in March, a secret Gaur had to keep for more than a month.

"It was kind of wild. After the semi-finals, when I kind of squeaked by on a question I didn't expect to know ... after that everything was a surprise," said Gaur.

Evidently there was a "tell" in Friday's show, a moment where Gaur realized he was going to win the tournament.

"At that moment it was just surreal, because it's something you always think about happening when you sign up for these kinds of things, but you don't consider the possibility of it," said Gaur.

As for the money, Gaur said he's planning to save it for the future, whether it be funding for graduate school or a down payment on a home — an answer only a Jeopardy! champion and owner of a perfect SAT score would give before age 20.

"I don't think I've ever been more humbled than being able to represent all the people who helped me get to this point, whether it's been at Lakeview or at Brown. It's really incredible to think about all the people who've gotten me to this place. I'm so thankful for all the support," Gaur.

Gaur now qualifies for the show's "Tournament of Champions," though dates for the next such tournament have not been set.
