By Staff
Seven agencies combined efforts Thursday after shots were fired at a Georgia State Trooper during a traffic stop in southern Hall County.

The multi-agency chase began around 3:45 p.m.on Old State Road in Jackson County when a trooper from the Athens Post pursued and eventually stopped on Bob Bryant Road in Hall County a black BWW 328 driving erratically.

While approaching the stopped vehicle the trooper heard three gunshots and immediately took cover behind his patrol vehicle according to Corporal C.E. Parker with Athens State Patrol Post 32.

Parker said that while waiting for backup to arrive the trooper saw a male suspect flee the car and climb over a fence in an adjacent yard.

With the assistance of Troopers from GSP-Gainesville, GSP-Hartwell and GSP-Athens, as well Hall County Sheriff’s Office, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Gainesville PD, a perimeter was established in the area. GSP Aviation responded as well as the Department of Corrections K-9 unit from Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto.

Shortly after Carlos Martinez, 27, of Gillsville was taken into custody without incident.

Martinez has been charged with several traffic offenses, as well as Felony Fleeing, Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Driving after being declared a Habitual Violator, Possession of Methamphetamine.

Martinez also had outstanding active warrants at the time of his arrest.

Evidence was recovered from the scene, including three shell casing from a pistol. The unnamed Trooper involved was not injured.

The incident remains under investigation.
