Baseball: Dragons get sweep of Stephens behind dominant pitching

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter

JEFFERSON — Jefferson continued to show off its improved pitching taking its third consecutive one-run win over Stephens County, this time 2-1, to complete an impressive three-game sweep of the Indians in Region 8-4A play Friday night.

The Dragons held Stephens to just two runs in the three game series, which were all decided by one run.

Vinny Farley got the win scattering five hits and allowing just one run in five innings. Patrick Hickox and Derek Vaughn each pitched a scoreless inning in relief with Vaughn getting the save.

The win kept the Dragons (12-6, 5-1 Region 8-4A) in first place in the standings one game ahead of St. Pius and two games ahead of both North Oconee and Stephens County.

Stephens County (17-4, 3-3) opened the game with a run in the first but Jefferson answered with a run in the bottom of the first. Later, Zac Corbin singled, stole second, and scored the eventual game-winner on a RBI single from Lane Watkins in the third.

Farley, Hickox, and Vaughn were able to hold off the Indians, who managed just two base runners after the third inning. Jefferson turned a double play in the seventh to end the game.
