Troopers: Gum Springs Elementary car rider attendant injured Thursday morning

A Gum Springs Elementary School car rider attendant suffered non-life threatening injuries Thursday morning when she was hit by a Jeep while helping with the morning drop-off period.

Erin Hughes, 35, of Hoschton was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment, said Major Patterson, Trooper 1st Class with the Georgia State Patrol.

"(The school) has two lanes of traffic that travel around the parking lot in the same direction in front of the school that allow students to get dropped off there. They've got teachers that stand in the center of the roadway, assisting with children getting out of the cars," said Patterson.

Hughes was apparently facing away from traffic, counting cars on the last turn before drivers reached the front of the Jefferson school when she was hit by the side mirror of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

According to the Jackson County School System's Facebook page, multiple people on scene were able to help Hughes before medical personnel arrived.

Patterson said the driver of the Jeep will not be charged.
