Baseball: Gainesville, Lakeview put up big numbers in wins; Jefferson edges Stephens

MT. AIRY — Gainesville baseball feasted on Habersham Central pitching on Wednesday, racking up 14 hits in a 12-0 win over the Raiders in Mt. Airy.

The Red Elephants (12-6, 3-2 Region 8-6A) also won their third straight to stay in the thick of the Region 8-6A race thanks to a dominant pitching performance from Kyle York.

York put up a complete-game, 5-inning performance, yielding just 1 hit, while striking out 4 batters in front of an error-free Gainesville defense.

Jared Smith and Clay Coffey each went 3-for-3 at the plate and scored 2 runs for the Red Elephants, with Smith driving in 3 runs and Coffey 1. Cale Conley also had 2 hits, including a double and an RBI, while Cameron Wilson also had 2 hits, a double and 2 RBI. Charlie Wall also doubled and drove in 2 runs, while Jackson Kemp doubled and scored 2 runs.

Gainesville plays host to Habersham Central on Friday at Ivey-Watson, looking to complete a three-game sweep.

KJ Millwood went 3-for-4 with a triple and 4 RBI to help lead the Lions' offensive outburst on Wednesday in Gainesville.

Holden Cooper also finished 2-for-4 with 3 RBI, and Campbell Melson went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI in the win. Bodie Blackwell went 2-for-2 with an RBI, and JD Roark went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Millwood, Roark and Andrew Estes all scored 3 runs apiece 

Ian Echols earned the win on the mound for Lakeview.

The Lions (9-8) travel to Tallulah Falls at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Three Dragons pitchers combined to shut down the Indians' line-up on Wednesday in Toccoa, as Jefferson won its second straight in the series in Toccoa.

Brandon Trefren got the start and worked 5 innings, yielding 3 hits and striking out 3 batters in earning the win. Vinny Farley and Derek Vaughn each worked 1 inning of scoreless, hitless relief.

Meanwhile, the Dragons (11-6, 4-1 Region 8-4A) got a first inning RBI single from Lane Watkins, scoring Justin Cole, to produce all the offense they would need. 

Cole finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two stole bases. Watkins, Ryan Godfrey and Mason Cooper provided Jefferson's other hits.

The Dragons close out the series with Stephens on Friday in Jefferson.
