Suwanee says 'no' to proposed event venue near White Street Park

Suwanee Council has given a "nay" vote to an event venue and reception hall that was proposed across from White Street Park.

In a split 5-1 vote, council denied a rezoning request Tuesday evening from Jennifer Spencer, who was looking to to develop the 1.5-acre property, said Marty Allen, city manager.

Developers had tweaked the site plans throughout the application process, moving some buildings around the property in an effort to address concerns raised at prior public hearings, but kept the project largely the same.

"At the end of the day, that didn't satisfy the concerns of the city council that voted against it," said Allen.

"I can't speak for the council and their decision-making. However, the community that did attend (the meeting) brought up issues largely around outdoor noise ... and traffic."

Councilwoman Linnea Miller was the only member to vote against the motion to deny the application.

Developers now must wait 12 months before they can try developing the property in another fashion, although a waiver can be granted by city council if it chooses that would cut out the waiting period.
