Hoschton, Braselton city councils okay land-swap in combined meeting

By AccessWDUN Staff

In an effort to streamline the annexation and de-annexation of some parcels of property, the Hoschton and Braselton city councils met in a joint session Thursday night.

Hoschton City Manager April Plank said the idea behind the combined meeting was meant to simplify the process, although it was confusing to some residents of both municipalities.

Council members from Braselton first voted to de-annex 2.369 acres of property, fronting the south side of Henry Street, owned by LSH Development. Immediately after that, council members from Hoschton voted to annex the same piece of property into their city. The developer plans to build single-family residences on the property, according to Plank.

The second property in question was a 69-acre tract off Davis Street in the city of Braselton; the property owner wants to develop a subdivision on the land.

According to Plank, there were two small "slivers" of property on the back side of the tract that were inside the city limits of Hoschton - the rest of the property was in Braselton.

"It didn't make sense for this [the two small tracts] to be in Hoschton, and then the entire neighborhood - everything else - be in Braselton city limits," said Plank.

Hoschton council members voted to de-annex those two slivers of property, and then Braselton council members voted to annex the properties.

The combined actions, in essence, resulted in a land swap for the two cities.

Plank said officials believed it was the first time since the 1980s or 1990s the two governments had held a joint meeting.

"For us to be able to sit there and come together like that and do what was best for the citizens was a pretty neat event," Plank said.
