Monroe Drive remains closed after fire, advisory lifted for Allen Creek

By B.J. Williams

A public advisory for a portion of Allen Creek in Hall County has now been lifted, according to environmental officials.

District 2 Public Health had issued the advisory last week following a March 4 fire at AFCO on Monroe Drive that allowed chemicals to leach into part of the creek.

A statement issued Monday afternoon said environmental and health officials could find no abnormal pH readings.

"Water quality monitoring has occurred daily and the pH of the water in Allen Creek has returned to an acceptable range," the statement read. "The responsible party for the site will continue water quality monitoring under the direction of the GA EPD and US EPA."

While the advisory for Allen Creek has been lifted, Monroe Drive remains blocked in the area.

Hall County Fire Service Capt. Zachary Brackett said parts of the AFCO building are still being removed and there's heavy machinery working in the area.

"The roadway will remain closed until this work is completed," Brackett wrote in an email.
