Sheriff calls in federal resources to 'resolve' Banks County school threat

HOMER — Banks County Sheriff Carlton Speed reports a 16-year-old male is in custody after a written threat of violence to several students Monday, March 5.

Speed said his office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Banks County Board of Education, worked to quickly resolve the situation.

“The sheriff’s office was in the process of being assisted by FBI-Atlanta and the FBI Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit-Quantico when the juvenile confessed to the threat during investigative questioning,” according to Speed.

“We will not allow our children to be threatened by anyone,” Speed said. "This should be an example that we will use all legal means necessary, including using our federal resources, to assist us in solving and prosecuting this type of terroristic threat.”

Sheriff’s officials said it did not appear that the students were in any danger during the few hours it took authorities to solve the crime. The investigation concluded that the juvenile acted alone.

Because the case involves a juvenile, the student's name is not being released.
