By B.J. Williams
A Gainesville man was struck and killed on I-985 Monday morning, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Sgt. Auston Allen of GSP's Post 6 said Kenneth Roper, 69, had pulled over on the right shoulder of I-985 southbound near Plainview Road to secure a load of cargo on his pick-up truck.

Another vehicle - a wrecker - being driven by Pavel Nemes, 53, of Danielsville, left the roadway and hit the rear of Roper's truck, according to Allen.

"[The wrecker] continued south and struck the driver [Roper] of vehicle 2 [the pickup truck]," Allen wrote in a press statement.

He said the wrecker then traveled about 30-40 yards off the highway and hit a tree. Allen said Nemes was not injured.

Nemes will faces charges of failure to maintain lane and second degree vehicular homicide, according to Allen.

The fatal crash happened around 11:15 a.m.
