Man, juvenile arrested for string of car break-ins at Gainesville apartment complex

A Grantville man and a juvenile are facing charges for allegedly trying to break into vehicles at the Lake Lanier Club Apartments in Gainesville over the weekend.

Zechariah Jay Givens, 21, and the juvenile, whose identity is being withheld, were spotted around 5:30 a.m. Saturday by an alert neighbor, said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook with the Gainesville Police Department in a statement issued Monday.

The pair ran from officers, but were taken into custody after a "short foot pursuit."

This is the second weekend in a row where police have been called to the complex to a reported string of car break-ins. Between Feb. 2-4, at least five entering auto cases and two stolen vehicle cases were reported at the complex, which is off of Ga. 53/Dawsonville Highway.

"The pair is believed to be responsible for the earlier cases. There is still an open and active investigation," said Holbrook.

Givens is charged with criminal attempt to commit a crime, entering a car to steal and obstruction of an officer. The juvenile faces the same charges.

More charges could be forthcoming, said Holbrook.

Police believe there could be more victims in the case, and they are asked to contact Gainesville Police at (770) 534-5254.
