By AccessWDUN Staff

Gwinnett County Fire Department investigators are hoping they can get some help from the public as they try to track down the person or persons who left a burning vehicle outside a home in the Auburn area.

Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a Friday afternoon press release that the vehicle was stolen from a private residence near Suwanee on Wednesday morning, Feb. 7.

"The vehicle was discovered burning the same day around 3:27 p.m. by a passerby who called 9-1-1," Rutledge said.

Rutledge said the burning car, described as a black 2007 Ford Fusion, was discovered outside the vacant home in the 1200 block of Mt. Moriah Road, NE. He said the vehicle was destroyed, but police who arrived at the scene were able to get the license plate number and find the owner of the vehicle. She told officers the car was taken sometime between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Wednesday.

"The person(s) responsible for the nefarious acts will likely face multiple criminal charges to include: Theft of Motor Vehicle and Second-Degree Arson, both felonies,” said Rutledge.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact the Gwinnett Fire Investigations Section at 678-518-4890 or the Georgia Arson Control Hotline at 1-800-282-5804.  Georgia Arson Control, Inc. offers a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction of those responsible for arson.
