Lady Dogs' win streak comes to a halt at LSU

By UGA Sports Communications

BATON ROUGE, La. — The Georgia Lady Bulldogs basketball team had its seven-game win streak snapped with a 71-60 defeat to LSU at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Thursday evening.

Following a loss to No. 2 Mississippi State in the first SEC game of the year, the Lady Bulldogs had won seven in a row — their best conference win streak since the 1999-2000 season. Georgia is now 19-3 overall and 7-2 in league action. LSU has won four of its last five games and improves to 14-6, 6-3.

“This was the first time this season I thought we did not execute the game plan and were not locked in defensively,” head coach Joni Taylor said. “Credit LSU — they outworked us and they were the better team tonight. We are going to put this behind us and get ready for Ole Miss on Sunday.”

Georgia trailed by just four at the end of the third quarter but hit 5-of-20 (25 percent) from the field in the final 10 minutes. Freshman Que Morrison led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points, while senior forward Mackenzie Engram reached the 1,000-point mark of her career with eight points Thursday night.

Morrison scored Georgia’s first eight as Robinson went to the bench with two fouls. The Lady Bulldogs still led 15-14 at the end of the first despite shooting just 29 percent shooting from the field.

LSU’s Raigyne Louis scored six-straight points to begin the second quarter as the Tigers built their largest lead — 24-20 — with 6:01 remaining until halftime. Following a basket from Stephanie Paul, Engram scored at the 4:11 mark of the second quarter to go over 1,000 in her career.

Engram’s basket tied the game at 26-26, but the Lady Bulldogs had to hold off Louis, who finished with 10 points in the second period. LSU went into the half with a slim 33-32 advantage.

That back-and-forth pace continued in the third quarter with neither team building more than a two-point lead. That was until Ayana Mitchell hit a shot with five seconds to go to put the Tigers up 51-47 at the end of the third. Those two points were two of a team-high 12 for Mitchell in the third.

LSU jumped out to its largest lead of the game with an eight point lead at the 4:37 mark of the fourth period. The Tigers never looked back en route to a 71-60 win.

Next up, the Lady Bulldogs host Ole Miss on Sunday at 2 p.m.
