Area's top swimmers and divers looking to make another statement at state

ATLANTA — Starting tomorrow in Atlanta, northeast Georgia's best prep swimmers and divers will attempt to add another chapter to a budding reputation at the GHSA's Swimming and Diving State Championship at Georgia Tech's McAuley Aquatic Center. 

Area standouts have made quite an impression over recent seasons in the state's deepest pool, winning a number of medals and even setting a few state records along the way. And this year's meet could include plenty more success, as competitors like Gainesville's Tanner Doan and Chestatee's Lindsey Grater help lead a talented field. Grater finished third in the 2017 Class A-AAAAA girls 500-yard freestyle and enters this year's meet with the state's fourth-fastest qualifying time in the event -- just one of a number of events the Lady War Eagles star, who will both swim and run cross country at the University of Tampa in Florida, qualified for at the state level.

Doan, meanwhile, will be swimming in waters he's set to call home, as the Red Elephants standout will continue competing for Georgia Tech at the next level. The Gainesville senior finished seventh in both the 200 individual medley (IM) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke and enters this year's meet with the state's second fastest IM qualifying time.

The duo are far from alone in competitors with podium dreams, however, as swimmers like Jefferson's Jackson Harvin enter with the state's second fastest 200 freestyle qualifying time, and Lumpkin County's Mateo Golloshi owns the third best 100 butterfly qualifying mark.

Buford's Caroline Irwin also owns the sixth fastest 50 free qualifying mark, while Commerce's Samantha Davidson is seventh, and the Jefferson girls 200 free relay enters with the third fastest time. North Hall's Julia Kelly, who finished ninth in last year's 100 free is also right back in the mix in a number of events.

Diving finals are set for Thursday, with swimming preliminary races set for Friday and finals on Saturday. All competition is divided into Classes 6A-7A and Classes 1A-5A.
