Friday fire causes extensive damage to Banks County home

Banks County officials have released details of the fire that caused extensive damage to a home on Borders Road near Commerce Friday afternoon.

Units from Banks County Fire/EMS responded to a reported structure fire at 228 Borders Road, Commerce, at 2:58 p.m. Friday, according to Banks County Fire/EMS Chief Steve Nichols.

“Upon arrival, units found a single-family residence with fire and smoke showing from the structure,” Nichols said Monday. “Bold Springs Fire Department [of Franklin County] was requested for automatic aid and personnel assistance.”

Nichols said the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.

“The occupants were not home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported,” Nichols said. “A family animal was lost the fire.”

Nichols said the fire was ruled as accidental in nature, adding the electrical system cannot be ruled out as a cause. The home received extensive damage.

“Banks County Fire Investigations is looking into the cause,” Nichols said.

The American Red Cross was requested to assist the family.

Units remained on scene until 6:15 p.m.
