Former clerk charged with stealing $36k from Hall County juvenile court

A former clerk with the Hall County Juvenile Court is facing a felony theft charge for allegedly stealing $36,000 from the court in a two-year period.

Lorena Marceleno, 36, was in charge of deposits and account books for the court, and investigators first got wind that the she was stealing money when a routine audit found the discrepancies, said Derreck Booth, Hall County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

Between Feb. 2016 and Feb. 2018, Marceleno is said to have stolen cash from fines and fees for her own use. An investigation was launched in the summer.

Warrants were taken out for her arrest on Tuesday, and she turned herself in Thursday on a single count of theft by taking.

"It's unfortunate that this happened, but this the result of committing this type of crime. Eventually, you will get caught," said Booth.

At last report, Marceleno remained in jail without bond.
