Girls basketball: Gainesville smokes SWAC; Lumpkin, Jefferson, Commerce, Bluff, Rabun win

By AccessWDUN Staff

Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy needed a heavy dose of water and sand to put the Gainesville Lady Red Elephants fire out Friday night at home.

Tia Shelton's hot-hand paced the Lady Red Elephants to an 84-21 blow-out win over SWAC.

Shelton scored 18 of her 25 points in a 35-0 first quarter for Gainesville.

Gainesville’s explosive first half led to a 57-7 halftime lead. Meanwhile, in the second half, the Lady Red Elephants continued their offensive onslaught, outscoring SWAC 27-14.

Amyah Topps tossed in 12 points for the Lady Red Elephants.

Gainesville has won its last four out of five games.

The Lady Red Elephants (5-3) will host Clarke Central Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.

LUMPKIN 37
EAST HALL 28

A big second quarter eventually pushed Lumpkin County over East Hall Friday night at Valhalla.

East Hall's defense wreaked havoc on the Lumpkin County, at least in the first quarter, holding the Lady Indians to 7 points and taking an 11-7 after one.

But, the Lady Indians flipped the script on East Hall in the second quarter, outscoring them 15-0 to take a 22-11 halftime lead.

"We had a tremendous defensive effort from our team," Lumpkin coach David Dowse said. "I thought we were able to take East Hall out of any kind of offensive flow. To their credit, East Hall also made it difficult for us to get an offensive flow, and we struggled at times."

East Hall turned up the defensive intensity in the second half and the scoreboard showed it. The Lady Vikings held Lumpkin to 13 second-half points. However, Lumpkin's defense wouldn't allow East Hall to make a run.

MacKenzie Pulley led the Lady Indians with 12 points and Ashlyn Wistocki had 10.

Maggie Griffin paced the Lady Vikings with 7 points.
