A 63-year-old man from Monroe was shot and killed by police Thursday morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Nelly Miles, GBI spokeswoman, said two officers responded to a home on East Marable Street around 9 a.m. when they received a report of a man with a gun.

When the officers arrived, the encountered Mahlon Edward Summerour, who appeared to be wearing a shower curtain over his clothing. He also was branding a weapon, according to a GBI press statement.

Miles said Summerour pointed his weapon at one of the officers; the officer then shot the man in the chest.

Summerour was taken to the hospital and later died.

Miles said investigators later determined Summerour had been carrying a replica Thompson submachine gun.

In addition to the incident in Monroe, the GBI investigated officer-involved shootings Thursday in Bartow County in northwest Georgia and in Terrell County in southwest Georgia.
