The Gwinnett County Animal Shelter has issued a seven-day quarantine of animals due to illness. The dogs currently residing at the shelter are being treated for Strep Zoo, a bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system. Strep Zoo does not affect cats; however, due to the shelter closure, cat adoptions will also be halted for the next seven days.
Four dogs have died as a result of Strep Zoo since Oct. 4, and another was euthanized after showing signs of the illness and rapidly declining health. Two dogs have tested positive for the illness and the results of two additional dogs are pending.
Shelter staff is administering antibiotics to all dogs in the facility. In addition, staff will be conducting a deep cleaning of the areas where the dogs are housed. All adoptions and special events at the shelter have been postponed until further notice.
Streptococcus zooepidemicus, or Step Zoo, is carried by dogs in their upper respiratory tract. Dogs can carry the disease without showing symptoms. In most cases, the dogs become ill due to a trigger factor, such as a significant stressful event. Infected dogs show symptoms similar to kennel cough along with a sudden onset fever, sneezing, rapid, shallow breathing, tiredness and reluctance to eat. In a small number of cases, the disease has been known to be fatal to dogs within 24 hours of contracting the infection.
“Though Strep Zoo is rarer in family pets, it is important for owners to be aware of the symptoms, especially if they regularly visit kennels or go to events where animals gather,” said Alan Davis, Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement director. “As always, consult your veterinarian with any concerns.”
Animal shelter staff will open a backup kennel for animals impounded during the closure. The backup kennel will be closed to the public; however, impounded animal photos will continue to be posted on the animal shelter website, www.GwinnettAnimalWelfare.com. Lost pets or owner reclaims will be scheduled by appointment only.
