First Baptist Church of Gainesville has released a statement regarding the recent retirement of Dr. Bill Coates, which said he voluntarily retired after learning of a sexual misconduct report made against him.
In an email statement, it was revealed Coates voluntarily retired in August after learning that the report was made.
The full statement is below:
"Dr. Bill Coates retired from the position of Pastor of First Baptist Church on August 19, 2018. He voluntarily retired after learning of a report having been made in which he was accused of sexual misconduct by an adult female former member of the church staff. Dr. Coates no longer has any affiliation with the ministries of the First Baptist Church.
"Immediately upon receiving this report, the First Baptist Church leaders went to work to provide support for the well-being of the woman with whom Dr. Coates had the inappropriate relationship, in so far as they could, and also assure that all current staff members are properly informed, educated, and provided with renewed training for appropriate professional ethical standard. FBC will continue to work to maintain the highest ethical practices and the safety of its members in all ministries.
"At this time, we have no further comment."
An email from the church indicated the Transition Leadership Team requested the church administration issue the statement to church members; the information was shared at the regular Deacons meeting Sunday before it was sent.
It also said to members that they will share any new information with the congregation as it develops. "Please know that our current church leadership will continue working to help our members recover and heal, and to prepare for its future ministries," ... "We encourage you to join us in praying for healing and restoration for our church."
Executive Pastor Dr. Kent Murphey did not wish to speak further when asked for comment via email.
Coates led First Baptist Church for 20 years.
