Piedmont golf teams lead after first rounds

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN — The Piedmont College men's golf team is on top of the leaderboard after round one of the Reeder Cup concluded on Monday at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club.

With a team score of +14 (294), the Lions lead Bob Jones by 15 strokes and Covenant by three heading into the final round, which will be played on Tuesday.

Juniors GRIFFIN KERN and JOSH DESAIN paced PC on day one, as both fired 1-over rounds of 71 to place in a tie for second on the individual leaderboard, just two shots back of leader Nathan Hawkins from Covenant, who was the only player to break par on the day.

Competing as an individual for Piedmont, freshman MICHAEL CLARDY shot a career-best round of 5-over 75. 

Fresh off an outstanding performance in the Piedmont Fall Invitational, sophomore MATTHEW LEEMANN also shot a 75 to place in a tie for fifth with three other players.

Sophomore CHRISTIAN PAYNE rounded out the team scores for the Lions with a 77.

COOPER YOUNG and DALTON CAULEY competed as individuals and shot rounds of 78 and 79, respectively.

The tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes on Tuesday. 

Lady Lions lead Maryville College Invitational after opening round

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — JANA GUY's low-round 75 helped the Lady Lions to a first place standing following round one of the Maryville College Fall Invitational Monday. Guy leads the field as the only player in the 70's in round one with Piedmont's own JORDAN ABBOTT in second place. 

Piedmont leads the tournament with a 323 in the first round putting them 37 strokes ahead of Maryville College who posted a 360. JANA GUY's 75 leads all players while Abbott is in second with an 82. Two Lady Lions tied for third as KENSLEY BROWN and SAMANTHA BEARDEN each scored an 83. 

Four of Piedmont's five in the tournament are in the top five with all tied for third or better. MATTIE MORRIS is 19th in the field after shooting a 103. There are 24 individuals in the event with four teams competing.
