Fire near Buford damages three apartments

Fire officials in Gwinnett County say three apartments received damage by a blaze sparked by discarded smoking materials.

Fire Captain Tommy Rutledge said crews responded to The Preserve at Mill Creek apartments across from the Mall of Georgia around 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

He said, "We arrived on scene and found flames on the exterior of the building coming from the balcony of two top floor apartments in what we call a 3-4 split apartment building."

He says no one suffered injuries but two apartments received damage from smoke and fire and another from the water used to extinguish the flames.

Rutledge also said, "Right now the cause of that fire has been determined to be accidental due to improperly discarded smoking materials."

Management at the apartment complex will assist the families that are displaced.
